Rather, my first bit of advice is to only bring what you love. If you don’t love the clothing, you’ll never photograph well in it. After this, I look for cuts and styles that bring interesting elements to the pictures. Regarding color, I try to keep things as simple as possible. Giving the human eye a lot of busy colors and patterns will distract from the most important element of the image, your expression.

Headshot photography is the only form of photography where you are the product. This is the very reason I prefer and advise clients to aim for simplicity in the background. In other words, there is no reason to show a bunch of trees or bushes in your headshot image. No one wants to have a rogue tree branch sticking out from behind their head. Similarly, the old brick wall technique isn’t helpful either. Again, who wants to see grout lines sticking out all over the place?! You may like the idea of being photographed outside, but the drawbacks to doing so may very well reduce the overall impact your headshot should be making.
Since the background of your headshot can either enhance or detract from your overall image, I prefer to keep the backgrounds clean and simple. Solid-colored backgrounds, such as white, grey, or black, keep the focus on you. Of course, incorporating some interesting texture with a canvas background can add a bit of interest, while keeping the viewer’s attention on you.
Most headshot photographers can achieve a variety of backgrounds, colors, and textures. However, whatever you choose should align with your brand, your messaging, and your particular use case(s).

What makes a good product or service better? Nuance, finesse, and subtlety.
I have long held the opinion that not all headshot photographers are created equal. In other words, it is impossible to compare different photographers, especially if the quality of the work you are likely to receive is significantly different. Of course, average folks may not necessarily see those differences, but they are glaringly apparent to those who know what to look for. As a result, the only point of comparison most will use is price. For some, price is the great equalizer, even though this is like comparing apples to oranges.
