About Pete Coco: From Musician to Professional Photographer
Can you briefly introduce yourself, where you are located, and the type of work you specialize in?
My name is Pete Coco. I am located in New York and specialize in headshots and portraiture for business professionals, actors, artists, musicians and creatives.
What led you into this creative field, and what keeps you passionate about it?
I have always been passionate about creating, whether as a musician, visual artist, or photographer. I began my interest in photography in high school, and in 2020 I decided to pursue it full-time.

The Pete Coco Approach to Professional Photography
From your perspective, what makes a great headshot truly effective?
The most important ingredient is the expression. Second to that, great lighting and composition are top on my list.
As a photographer, how do you help clients feel more comfortable in front of the camera?
Just be genuine, and don't try to force it. I chat with them, get to know them, make the space inviting and comfortable, and collaborate with them to get a photo they love.
How does your approach to capturing people differ between photography and videography, or between genres?
It's much more focused on the individual, and I can take my time with them. Also, I have more time and control over the lighting and other critical details.

Professional Photography in Today's Market
What's your opinion on the importance of professional visuals in today's digital-first world?
It's the first thing people will see when researching your brand. Its importance can't be overstated especially as part of a well-rounded marketing plan.
Have you noticed any trends in how professionals want to be portrayed today?
Yes. People are moving away from the head-and-shoulders, flat light, style. My clients are moving towards images that stand out and are more in the portraiture genre.
In your experience, how do different professions approach headshots differently?
Some businesses see the value, some don't. Connecting with the right clients is key.

Working with Clients: Preparation and Process
For clients who don't feel "photogenic," what advice do you typically give?
I tell them everyone feels that way, and that everyone hates getting their headshot. We laugh and break the ice this way, and then I remind them that I have the skills to help them look great, and that we collaborate together on the angles and poses that work best for them.
What kind of preparation and considerations do you recommend for someone getting ready for a professional shoot?
Bring more clothing than you think you need. Get your hair/makeup done. I work with an excellent HMUA and always recommend her services.
What's a common misconception people have about what a headshot session is really like?
They think they will hate it, and dread the process. However they leave with smiles and having had a great time.
Behind the Scenes: Professional Photography Insights
What kind of lighting, composition, or direction tricks do you think most clients would be surprised to learn about?
They never believe you when you tell them to jam their neck forward and point their chin down... until they see the results!
What do you wish more clients understood about the process behind professional photography?
The photographer makes all the difference, and they are not created equal.

Industry Advice and Professional Insights
How do you think photographers can differentiate themselves in such a competitive industry?
Be yourself. Stop trying to copy everyone else and create work that is unique and stands out. Network, be a valuable member of your community and your community will value you and your services. Be humble, and remember that it's a privilege to get paid to photograph people. Treat people the way you want to be treated.
If someone's rebranding themselves professionally, what role does a headshot play in that journey?
A crucial role. The images you show the world tell them more about you than any blurb can. Your image must represent your brand in the correct light.
What's one piece of advice you'd give someone nervous about investing in professional visuals?
Find a great photographer and there will be nothing to be nervous about. Talk to them on the phone to get a feel for their personality.
Client Success Stories
Do you have any stories of when a professional headshot made a real difference for a client?
Yes. Many such stories, but the most common one is from acting clients who tell me they got booked because of my headshots. I love hearing that!

Pete's Final Thoughts
Any final thoughts you'd like to share—whether it's advice for potential clients, tips for emerging creatives, or something you wish more people knew?
People want to work with good people. They don't want marketing schemes, gimmicks, and they don't want to work with someone who only cares about money. Like it or not, people expect so much more from a small business than they do from a large faceless corporation and the human element can't be underestimated. Again, treat others like you would want to be treated.
