Should I Wait To Have My Headshot Taken?

Why do we put off for tomorrow what can be done today?

We procrastinate and put things off…and in the end, our competitors reap the rewards. Unfortunately, that is the cold, hard truth. While we are waiting for the opportune moment to come, someone else has already seized that opportunity, and we are left scratching our heads either wondering why we were passed over, or why we waited so long.

I see this in headshot photography all the time. In fact, I was scrolling through facebook feeds, and in one particular group, someone had questioned whether or not they should get their headshot taken now, despite the fact that they want to lose some weight.

Here’s another dose of reality: If you wait for that moment, you will lose out on many more opportunities. Weight loss is a fickle thing. Some people really embrace the idea and go full bore on diet and exercise. But, for most humans, weight loss doesn’t come easily, or in a short period of time.

Even if you succeed at losing a few pounds, consider the time investment in achieving those goals compared to the number of career opportunities you will pass up.

In the end, you may be happier with your physique, but the opportunity cost could be greater than the amount of time you waited.

The same principle applies to feeling fear or anxiety about whether or not your are photogenic.

So, here’s what I’m saying:

If you are going to audition for gigs, apply for a job, present yourself to customers or an audience of any sort, you would be doing yourself a tremendous disservice to wait until…. whatever benchmark you set. You could be taking the bull by the horns, and leveling up your career…. or at least gaining traction towards doing so.

To be clear, no one is saying not to lose weight if that is the path you have chosen. What I am suggesting is that you shouldn’t wait to have a headshot taken. Your authentic self is what people are after. People want to know who you are, what you stand for, if can you get the job done, how competent you are, and if you connect with them.

I wholeheartedly encourage you to rethink delaying!
